The Colors of Indigo Workshop - June 7 2025
Taught by Eileen Hallman of New World Textiles
Saturday, June 7 2025 | 9 AM – 6 PM
Tabby Studio | Canton, NC
$175 – Includes all materials, snacks, and lunch
Join expert natural dyer Eileen Hallman for a full-day outdoor workshop at Tabby Studio, nestled in the mountains of Canton, NC. In this hands-on workshop, we'll focus exclusively on coaxing blues, greens, yellow, pinks, lavenders, and purples from Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) and Indigofera tinctoria.
Using dried, pulverized indigo leaves and silk fabric, we’ll learn how to create multiple dyebaths that highlight indirubin and isatin, the lesser-known compounds in indigo that produce stunning purples and soft pinks, rather than the familiar blues. We’ll explore techniques that manipulate temperature and timing to bring out these unique colors, working primarily with silk and sharing samples to create our own take-home reference sheet.
This workshop takes place outdoors at Tabby Studio, a working fiber studio home to animals, gardens, and honeybees. Please dress comfortably for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a water bottle, an apron and gloves. A sandwich lunch and snacks will be provided.
Space is limited. Please carpool if possible.
